Update New Program Launched to Improve Cardiac Care for Minority Patients
In an effort to reduce racial and ethnic disparities by improving the quality of health care for patients from diverse backgrounds, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) launched a new program, Expecting Success: Excellence in Cardiac Care. The $13.2 million program is designed to improve cardiovascular care for African Americans and Latinos while helping hospitals develop successful strategies for improving the quality of care for all patients. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both minority and majority populations in the United States. The new program is housed at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in Washington, DC.

Best Practices Creating a Staggered Staffing Plan to Match Patient Census
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) in Los Angeles is one of the largest academic medical centers in the western U. S. and, like many other hospitals; they are continually faced with staffing challenges. When Flora Haus, R.N., M.S.N., C.E.N., service line manager of CSMC's emergency department, was faced with the challenge of a staffing pattern that didn't match patient census, she redesigned staffing plans. Flora shared her experience and unique staggered staffing plan with Urgent Matters.

Innovations Initiating Early Patient Care Through Team Triage and Treatment
Like many safety net hospitals across the country, Inova Fairfax Hospital's emergency department sees thousands of patients each year - many of whom are not critically injured, but who instead arrive with minor injuries or other problems. Dr. Thom Mayer, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Inova Fairfax Hospital, spoke with Urgent Matters about Team Triage and Treatment, a unique and innovative approach to relieve emergency department overcrowding by streamlining treatment of those less-critical ED patients.

Perspectives JCAHO Official Comments on New Patient Flow Standard
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' (JCAHO) new Leadership Standard, "Managing Patient Flow," became effective on Jan. 5, 2005. This new standard puts an obligation on hospital leadership to develop plans to maximize efficient patient flow throughout the hospital. Urgent Matters spoke with Robert Wise, M.D., vice president of the Division of Standards and Survey Methods at JCAHO, who shared some history on the new standard and what it means to hospitals being surveyed by JCAHO for accreditation.
